Prom is done differently in Sanpete (it's reason 46 why I love this place). Junior prom is a big deal. BIG. It's a two night affair. The first night is boy's choice and the second night is girl's choice. Now, what makes this prom stand out, is the program. A program that the community pays money to come watch.
Let me explain. Juniors who want to participate are paired up according to height. They are not paired up with their date and do not actually need to go to prom to be in the program. On the night of the program, each pair is introduced by name, parents, and city.
This is my niece being introduced.
Another pair being introduced and a better view of the gym.
After all pairs are introduced they promenade around the gym, forming letters of the high school, the numbers of their graduating class, and a short dance. The best way to experience this is to show you. I couldn't upload my video, but found one on YouTube that just happens to have my niece in it. She is the one in the center between the blue dress and the pink dress.
Now comes my favorite part. The parents are invited down to dance with their student (moms dance with sons and dads dance with daughters). Tears are often shed during this moment.
Parents dancing with their junior.
The audience then swarms the floor to take pictures with their junior. End of program. We file out and the students now get to have a traditional prom. I'm already looking forward to the next one.
